Ilha Grande Facts and History

Ilha Grande’s history shares similarities with the discovery of Rio de Janeiro, as it was first inhabited by indigenous people when the Portuguese arrived. Colonization began with the construction of farmhouses, and the island soon became a hub for the African slave trade, where enslaved people were disembarked and distributed throughout the region. Pirates of various nationalities also used Ilha Grande as a strategic base for attacks. The expansion of plantations relying on slave labor led to severe deforestation. Over time, the island saw the establishment of prisons, reflecting a history of shifting purposes. The Lazareto, originally a quarantine hospital, remains the only standing historical monument. Later, the fishing industry became the economic backbone of Ilha Grande, and a significant cargo ship played a vital role in its trade and development.

Top 10 Things to Do in Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande is such a phenomenal place to visit and while there is plenty to do there, we have created a list of our favorites.  While you can do a day trip to Ilha Grande, we recommend that you spend a little more time there and stay within Abraão Village on the Big Island.  There are numerous hostels and guesthouses located there and they all offer all the comforts of home. Here are the top 10 things to do in Ilha Grande:

Take a Trek to Lopes Mendes

When you choose to trek to Lopes Mendes, you will find that you are walking along a seven-kilometer-long trail.  This trail is not too difficult and along the way, you will find yourself discovering stunning beaches like Mangue and Pouso.

Cachoeira da Feitiiceira Waterfall

The trail to the top of this waterfall is not easy, but once you arrive fifteen meters up, you will be thrilled that you tackled the challenge.  You can do a little rappelling near the falls, but we prefer a refreshing swim in the river below.  When you are finished seeing the magnificent falls and the rushing water that spills over, you might want to consider taking a walk to Feiticeria Beach.  This beach is only an hour’s walk from Abraão, but you can also take a boat back if you wish.

Pico do Papagaio

Pico do Papagaio, which is also known as the Parrot’s Peak, is approximately one thousand meters high.  There are not many hikes within Rio, or the surrounding areas, that will take you this high up, but the distance and height is worthwhile due to the spectacular views that can be seen from the top.

Diving

Ilha Grande is one of the best spots in the world for diving.  The water is crystal clear and clean, and once you are under the water, you can easily see the numerous pirate ships that have sunk to the bottom and have been left there all these years.  You never know what treasures you might discover down in the water around Ilha Grande, so you may want to take a few diving lessons before your arrival.

Dois Rios

The name of this beach is derived from the fact that there is a river on each side of the sand.  There is a road that connects this beach to Abraão, so you can easily trek the trails to Parnaioca Beach as well.  While you can do some amazing surfing at this beach, or take a swim in the river, you might be more interested in wandering around to see the ruins of the prison that is located there.

Aventureiro

Aventureiro is the one beach in Ilha Grande that is considered picture perfect and you might wonder if you have seen it on a postcard in the past.  This beach is also a surfer’s paradise and when you are surfing, you will find that you have five hundred meters of sparkling green water to soar through.  You must arrive early at this beach, because it is only allowed to have 560 people on it at a time.  Therefore, those who arrive late will be turned away until others leave the area.  There are not any structures on this beach and any energy that is used is created by small generators.  It is a good idea to bring everything that you will need for the day, especially food and water.

Lagoa Azul

Lagoa Azul, or the Blue Lagoon, this destination in Ilha Grande has the exact same name as the movie that Brooke Shields was in.  This little piece of paradise is perfect for snorkeling, but the only way you can get there is by boat.  However, that only adds to the charm and tranquility that this extraordinary destination offers.

Green Lagoon

While the Blue Lagoon is the most popular, you must take the time to travel via boat to the Green Lagoon as well.  This area gets its name from all the green coral that is in the water.

Saco do Céu

This part of Ilha Grande is the perfect place to visit when you are craving fresh seafood.  While your days can be filled with jet skiing and relaxing on a yacht, your dinners can include the freshest catch of the day.  Of course, you must try to visit Saco do Céu when there is a full moon, because the ambiance is even better when meals are served under the bright shining moon.

Parnaioca

Parnaioca is another beach in Ilha Grande and there is approximately one kilometer of sandy shoreline that leads to the strong waves of the water.  This area offers rest, without all the distractions of the rest of the world.

We hope our ten favorite things to do in Ilha Grande soon become yours!  You can spend an entire day at any of these destinations, so we always recommend that travelers like yourself take three days to see this part of the world.  Yes, you can quickly see everything in a day, but then you are missing out on the true beauty of Ilha Grande!

How long to stay in Ilha Grande?

The ideal length of stay in Ilha Grande depends on your travel style, but a minimum of three to four days is recommended to fully enjoy its natural beauty. This allows time to explore the famous Lopes Mendes Beach, hike through lush rainforest trails, take a boat tour to stunning lagoons, and relax in the island’s laid-back atmosphere. If you love nature and adventure, staying a week or more gives you the chance to discover hidden beaches, snorkel or dive in crystal-clear waters, and truly disconnect from the outside world.

During the high season (December to March), hotel and attraction prices are higher, and the landscape is warmer with more regular rains. During spring and autumn, the tourist activity is lower. Sometimes, it isn’t easy to fully enjoy the scenery or the village due to the incredible amount of tourists. Therefore, we advise traveling in the low season or before the tide of people arrives.

If you want to know it from end to end, it is better to contract private tours. You can tour the most emblematic sites in a day trip but also stop to enjoy all the natural and cultural benefits of the area on a one-week tour.

Staying at Ilha Grande involves interspersing beach days with days of walking.

Remember that the towns around this area are ancient and the only transport available are taxi boats, bicycles or walking.

Most beaches, such as Lopes Mendes or Praia dos Rios, are in the middle of tropical jungles. This means you must cross the forest to dip in the sea.

Eating in homemade restaurants, playing in public squares, exploring waterfalls and rivers, snorkeling, or scuba diving on the beaches are many things to do on Ilha Grande. You’ll want to stay forever!

Ilha Grande Travel Blog: Where to Stay in Ilha Grande

With more than 300 beaches available for tourists, you will have no problem choosing where to lie on the sand to get a good tan in Ilha Grande.

Many seasoned tourists (especially foreigners) plan their vacations in Ilha Grande by hiring private tours with local guides. But if you plan to explore these beautiful bays, you can opt for several lodging alternatives.

Forget about the oversized suites and the luxuries. Ilha Grande has no 5-star hotels, as the villages are very simple and old. Depending on your budget, you can rent tiny houses, go camping, or book a room in a pousada or hostel.

But that doesn’t mean you have to give up comfort. Social Ilha Grande Hostel is one of the most visited in the year. All the rooms offer essential services and have a patio and a living space. The view is incredible, and very close to places of interest in Vila do Abraão.

At Che Lagarto Hostel Ilha Grande, you can share a room with another tourist or book one privately. This hostel house is 10 minutes from Ilha Grande’s center and 850 meters from Abraão.

If you like something simpler but cozier, Pousada Lagamar is a little paradise in Angra Dos Reis. Small, quiet, and personally taken care of by its owners, it is a delight in the middle of Eden!

For a deserved family vacation, we recommend visiting Pousada Tagomago Beach Lodge. With one of the best views of Abraão, all rooms are open to being in touch with tropical nature.

If you decide to stay at Ilha Grande, don’t forget to come prepared: comfortable clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, enough cash, and a willingness to have fun!

How to get to Ilha Grande from Rio?

Getting to Ilha Grande, one of Brazil’s most beautiful islands, involves a combination of road and boat travel. Here’s how you can do it from Rio de Janeiro:

1. Travel to the Port

You first need to reach one of the ports that offer boats to Ilha Grande. The main departure points are:

  • Mangaratiba (closest to Rio, with fewer boat departures)
  • Conceição de Jacareí (most frequent boat departures)
  • Angra dos Reis (largest port with many options)

From Rio de Janeiro to the Ports

  • By Car: Rent a car or take a taxi/Uber (2 to 3-hour drive).
  • By Bus: Take a bus from Rodoviária Novo Rio to Angra dos Reis or Mangaratiba. Bus companies like Costa Verde operate this route (~3 to 4 hours).
  • Private Transfer: Many agencies offer direct transfers from Rio to Conceição de Jacareí with a speedboat included.

2. Take a Boat to Ilha Grande

Once at the port, you need to take a ferry or speedboat:

  • Slow Ferry (Barca) – Cheaper (~R$20) but takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Speedboat (Flexboat) – Faster (~R$50-100) and takes 30-40 minutes.

3. Arriving at Vila do Abraão

Most boats arrive at Vila do Abraão, the island’s main village. From there, you can explore the island by foot or boat taxi, as there are no cars on Ilha Grande.

Paradise Found: The Lopes Mendes Beach – A Must-Visit Destination in Ilha Grande

Paradise can be found on the breathtaking Lopes Mendes Beach in Ilha Grande. This spectacular beach is approximately three kilometers long, with just enough space for those who arrive to sit on the clean sand as they look out to the sparkling tranquil water.

Of course, the water is not always as tranquil as it could be due to the number of surfers that arrive to catch the perfect wave each day. However, all that activity allows people to become mesmerized by the actions of those performing the tricks of their trade. Therefore, no one minds when the waves become full of people providing entertainment for a few hours!

Lopes Mendes Beach has been considered one of the top ten beautiful beaches in the entire world by Tripadvisor for many years now. That designation has brought extra attention to this area, but that doesn’t mean the beach is suffering from overuse.

Everyone can experience this beach during one of our Day Trips in Rio de Janeiro. When a person takes our Ilha Grande Day Tour, they can visit Lopes Mendes Beach and the beaches of Pouso, Mangue, and Itaoca.  To get to Lopes Mendes Beach, everyone on our tour must either follow a trail from Abraão Village, which takes three hours, or t,  travel by boat,  which gets them to their destination much faster.

The Lopes Mendes Beach can be pretty deserted at times, entirely different from the past when people from the Caiçara Community spent much time there.

Anyone who doesn’t want to spend an entire day at Lopes Mendes Beach or the other beaches in the area can choose our half-island tour instead. That tour allows people to take a boat to the Blue and Green Lagoons before experiencing the Saco do Ceu.

Paraty Or Ilha Grande?

Although many seasonal tourists choose to stay in the heart of Rio, the biggest attraction is the coastal towns. But now the million-dollar question: where to go? Which is the best village to fit into the comfortable atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro?

For adventurous spirits willing to give up certain “luxuries” of civilization, Ilha Grande is a fairly profitable option.

Vila do Abraão is its capital and the focus of all visits. The inns and hotels are simple but comfortable houses. From there, it is possible to travel on foot or by taxi boat to any of the tourist attractions, such as the famous Lopes Mendes beach.

You can also enjoy the 16 trails throughout the island, exploring the richness of tropical nature. In Ilha Grande, you can do kayaking, surfing, snorkeling, climbing, scuba diving, or camping!

However, another destiny without equality is Paraty. Unlike Ilha Grande, this colonial town is much quieter and is ideal for those who want to rest body and mind.

From there, you can walk along its stone sidewalks, eat at local restaurants, and rent a humble but comfortable cottage. You can also walk along the Atlantic forest and swim in Trindade or Sono Beach.

In Paraty, you can get to know the most important historical monuments of the area, such as the Culture House or dance capoeira in the square, right in the Historic Center.

Forget the phone signal and the city chaos! There, you can relax, go to bed early, and recharge your batteries before returning to your daily routine.

We hope we solved your dilemma with our Ilha Grande Travel Guide. If not, why not hire a private day trip if you haven’t decided where to go yet? We will take you through both destinations so that you can get to know Rio’s most emblematic natural and cultural secrets. Come and travel!
