Best things to see and do in Ipanema

Ipanema is a neighborhood in southern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The name “Ipanema” comes from the Tupi-Guarani language and means “bad, dangerous waters,” as the area was once known for its treacherous sea currents. Ipanema was mainly undeveloped in the early 20th century and considered a remote destination. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Ipanema began to gain popularity as a tourist destination, thanks in part to the success of the song “The Girl from Ipanema,” composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. As the song became an international hit, tourists began to flock to Ipanema to see the place that had inspired it. The neighborhood quickly became a hub of culture and nightlife, with a thriving music scene and an influx of artists and intellectuals. Today, Ipanema is one of the most famous and fashionable neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. It is known for its stunning beaches, high-end shopping, and vibrant nightlife. Despite its popularity, however, Ipanema has managed to maintain much of its original charm and remains a beloved destination for travelers worldwide. things to see and do in ipanema

Arpoador Rocks

The Arpoador Rocks can be found in an area of Rio de Janeiro between Ipanema and Copacabana. These rocks were first discovered in 1930 by the locals of Ipanema, and the fishermen frequented the nearby waters. Those same people created the beach atmosphere and culture that can be found within this city today. The name of these rocks came from the fishermen who used harpoons to catch their fish each day.  The first surfer in Brazil utilized the water in Arpoador, and since that day, surfers from around the world have discovered that the rocks create amazing waves that reach up to ten feet high. Unfortunately, surfers have little room to begin their ride when the waves clash. That causes an issue when this area gets extremely crowded due to the excellent surf.  One of the best times to be near the Arpoador Rocks is at the end of the day as the sun sets in the sky. Everyone who visits Rio de Janeiro can incorporate a trip to the Arpoador Rocks into their private tour with us. Our tours are an excellent way to see all the fascinating sights within Rio, including these breathtaking and massive rocks.

Tom Jobim Statue in Ipanema

Tom Jobim was a fantastic conductor and composer, and four years ago, a statue of him was erected in Ipanema to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his death. While he went by Tom, his official name was Antonio Carlos Jobim Brazilian Almeida, born in 1927. In addition to being a composer and conductor, he was also a singer, arranger, guitarist, and pianist. His main musical focus was on bossa nova, and two of his famous songs were Girl from Ipanema and Samba Plane. However, he composed almost four hundred songs that numerous other performers have sung.  This statue can be found in Arpoador, near the shore of the beach, which was one of Tom’s favorite places in Rio de Janeiro. Christina Motta is the Brazilian artist who created and designed this statue. She used a photograph of Jobim with his songwriter partner during the 1960s for her inspiration.  The bronze statue shows Tom standing with his guitar over his right shoulder as if taking a stroll along the beach. This statue is considered an excellent way for locals and visitors to keep Tom Jobim’s memory alive while also allowing people to share his favorite place in the world.  Anyone interested in seeing this magnificent statue can include it in their itinerary for their private tour with Rio Cultural Secrets.

Hippie Market on Sundays

One of the most popular attractions within Ipanema is the Hippie Market, which takes place on Sundays each week. This market can be found in the Praça General Osório, which opens at seven in the morning and closes at seven in the evening.  The Hippie Market began in 1969 when Hugo Bidet wanted to find a way to sell more of his Christmas cards. While he could have used the extra money for many things, his main goal was to earn enough to afford to buy more beer at the bar in the same square. This market was initially called ArtSquaree Square, but the name was changed once the loSquareppies arrived with their items to sell.  The outside of the square is where numerous stalls can be found. The inside is reserved for those who are selling larger pieces like canvases. Anyone who travels to this market will find that it is one of the best places to purchase souvenirs of Rio de Janeiro. Visitors will find clothing, artwork, furniture, jewelry, and many other items reminding them of their time in this city. Some people believe the Hippie Market’s best part is the food available at some stalls. Everyone is encouraged to try the Acaraje, a croquette made from a mixture of black-eyed peas, manioc paste, coconut, and prawns. Of course, other Bahian foods are also available, including dozens of delectable dessert items.  Everyone is encouraged to barter at the Hippie Market, which is the best way to receive excellent prices. This is especially true for those purchasing more than one item from each vendor.
